Sweet Garleek

2024-05-13

I planted some sweet garleek seeds from Row 7 Seeds to compliment the batches of sweet prince tomatoes and midnight roma tomatoes, which I also ordered from Row 7 Seeds. It sounds like an interesting cross between, you guessed it, garlic and leeks, and I can’t wait to try it!

The first seedlings started sprouting today. They are thin and pointy.

Most of the plants have recovered from underwatering, but not all. The plants were watered twice using the misting spray bottle and the healthier plants were given water with a very small amount of liquid fertilizer.

The 2024-03-17 batch of romaine lettuce is looking yellow so I moved the light closer to the plants. The sweet garleek isn’t yellow, but it does look thin and tall. It’s hard to tell if they are leggy because leeks are generally tall and skinny, but moving them closer to the light might help them, as well.

I separated the remaining garleek seedlings and planted them in a 3x3 grid in a 3 different 5 inch pots. This will give them more space to grow their roots until I am ready to transplant them into a new garden bed.

I took a few of the plants and placed them in between the midnight roma, habanada pepper, and basil plants in the raised garden bed.

I gave the plants in the garden bed an extra deep soak and completely filled the bottom trays with water for the plants that haven’t been transplanted because I will be out of town for a few days. It’s going to be hot so I need to make sure they have enough hydration.

The plants in the garden bed are huge and the ones that haven’t been transplanted look pretty good, too.

I transplanted about 5 to 6 more plants into a new garden bed with the 2024-05-13 batches of sweet prince tomato, midnight roma tomato, habanada pepper, and basil.

I watered the plants with a new type of fertilizer, Fox Farm Big Bloom, and a Cal-Mag Plus, which is a calcium, magnesium, and iron plant supplement.
